and have played live a couple of times. Both are also active with solo electronic musics. For this new CD the two dwell heavily on thelyrics written by Borisov, which are a 'panorama of everyday life' and find their way in a rather twisted set of music, reflectingalmost anything alternative:improvisation, electronical glitch, rock and noise. The texts are all sung/spoken in Russian (translations are in the booklet) which add a sort of alienated feel to it, in case you are not aware what is being said here. Together with the somewhat alienating sounds covered as the music on this CD, this is an highly original CD that hasn't met his counterpart yet, at least not by me.

SUSANNE BROKESCH: SHARING THE SUNHAT CD  EUR 15
Susanne Brokesch is from Vienna, Austria and she has recorded electronic music for labels like Cheap (under the name Sil) & Sahko as Sil Electronics). This is here debut solo album and it is a stunning record of lo-ambient atmospherics. She is credited with playing acoustic guitar, dugi-dugi, maracas & electric bass, but that does little to explain the soundscapes developed here; the mysterious clickings, cloaked pulsations and general attention to sound detail that makes this such an enthralling listen. Beautiful, mystery-laden design as well.

CINEMATIC ORCHESTRA: EVERY DAY CD  EUR 20
"At a time when the chill out thing substitutes blandness for maturity, when so called 'nu-jazz' groups loop up some flutes with a boring beat and have the nerve to call it jazz, and electronic music seems to be searching for its dummy again, J. Swinscoe's Cinematic Orchestra return to blow away all your expectations. Back in 1999, the group's debut record Motion set critical tongues wagging with its unique take on modern electronic music production techniques and the sheer visual energy of its sound. Now the group return with a follow-up which is deeper than the ocean, packing a tremendous emotional punch, by turns mournful and celebratory and with a rigour that is so often lacking in contemporary cut and paste. Across seven sweeping, dramatic tracks, the group take you through classic soul, jazz, choral pieces, sinking horn riffs, throbbing harp b-lines, minimalism and more. COTI: LIDO LATO 2xCD  EUR 15
With his debut material appearing on the Basic-Channel sponsored "Vibrant Forms" label a couple of years back, this interesting double cd from Coti explores the more stripped down end of microscopic emissions, found sounds and organic minimalism. The first cd, “lido”, has a more abstract and fluid identity, bringing to mind aquatic textures with post-industrial scenery. The second cd, “lato”, has a more melodic and compact identity, with successive piano parts and strings imbuing the composition with direction. Coti is also a member of free music improvisation club 2-13, and has played live electronics with many musicians including evan parker, phil durrant, nikos veliotis, rhodri davies, andrea neumann, coh, philip glass. Check.

EFTERKLANG: TRIPPER CD  EUR 10
Copenhagen's Efterklang reach far beyond the expectations of a debut with their ambitious first album for The Leaf Label. The ten-member group's music whispers like thunder, combining glacial strings, febrile electronic rhythms, hushed male-female vocals (reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine) and a Greenlandic choir -- all joining together to a transcendent whole. Tripper was a year in the making, and it captures the intricate majesty of the best film soundtracks and most evocative classical works. Efterklang means 'reverberation' (literally, 'after noise'), but is loosely translated as 'remembrance.' Both definitions capture the band's effect; a strong sense of yearning lies at the heart of their work, while ghosts of aggression linger menacingly along the edges. Tripper breathes with sensations and subtleties and emotional depth, bringing to mind the music of Rachel's, Mum or Mogwai.

GROOVE ARMADA: VERTIGO  EUR 10
NME: "Saturday afternoon. You and your buddies park up your runabout old bangers in the middle of the big city and you lay back on the windscreen. You can just about stand the heat on your shoulders while the car stereo pumps out the music. And the music in question simply has to be Groove Armada. It should come as a bit of a surprise, therefore, to learn that GA - aka Andy Cato and Tom Findlay - recorded the sublimely classic nu-funk sounds of 'Vertigo' in a remote cottage in the Lake District. It's an album that meanders through modern dance genres (utilising jazz, hip-hop, soul, house) with its head in the clouds, while golden oldie tunes are sampled at will and guest vocalists drop in for the odd embellishment. Such carefree logic comes to its zenith on the beatific lilt of 'At The River' where a sensual female vocal repeats the couplet: "If you're fond of sand dunes and salty air/Quaint little feelings just here and there" over the coolest of acid easy-listening breaks and mellow trumpet balm. In the world of electronica, about as organically sublime as it gets."

A real labour of love from Hawtin here, and no doubt the definitive mix for all Minimal freaks out there. The Cd comes with the regular 74 minute version – an unbeleivably tight, intuitive and beautifully structured mix that takes in a staggering number of tracks – easily over 100 at first glance. Peter McIntyre, The Wire:"The Jedi Knights, one of the bewildering number of identities which Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton use for their musical cross-platform activities (others include Global Communication, Reload, The Mod Wheel and Link), could be considered to have launched the Electro revival. For the most part, this is a highly sophisticated and adventurous work that belies its outer appearance. If we are moving into a brave new world of post-dance dance music, where stylistic borders no longer exist, then the musical Esperanto of their album  is a firm basis from which to build a language for this emerging hybrid land."

KLIMEK: MILK & HONEY CD  EUR 15
Latest Kompakt ambient comes from Sebastian Meissner, resident of frankfurt/main. A conceptual artist, composer, sound designer and photographer, presents his latest project "milk&honey", after considered works for labels such as mille plateaux, beta bodega, sub rosa and cronica, reinstalling his klimek guise on kompakt. Meissner's works are mainly concerned with coincidence, which in case of klimek bases itself on the classic analog soundsource: guitar. slow motion soundshapes unfold into boundless width and contemplative silence. pictures, references, associations, predilections rove atop the imagination. "milk & honey" draws on the italian western and the classic roadmovie. Meissner rather refers to the country where milk and honey flows, which is reflected on the coverartwork and in the quicktime movie contained on the cd version. his photographs also form the raw material for the multimedia installations. this album sounds as if a lonely guitar - scattered to the four winds ˆ escapes the ear. a perfect, suspenseful soundtrack for a sultry thunderstorm. Music for climatic disaster - and quite possibly the most absorbing release on Kompakt yet.

KLIMEK: MUSIC TO FALL ASLEEP CD  EUR 15
Just as DJ Olive lulled us into a deep slumber with his ‘Sleep’ album a few weeks back, now Kompakt’s Klimek once again concoct a blend of loveliness tailor-made for those times when you just want to shut yourself off from the outside world. Those of you who picked up the sublime ‘Milk and Honey’ album will already be aware of the kind of blissful effervesence that Klimek construct, with ‘Music to Fall Asleep’ the reflective ambience is taken to even floatier pastures. The signature stuttering guitars are present and correct, stretched and moulded like putty to create a total wash of sound, while the deep-rooted melodies are barely distinguishable under the quagmire of effected instruments; as they change the reaction is seismic. Music like this takes control of you, and the small shifts in sound and structure impact like tidal waves - making for an evocative, mesmerising listening experience. "Music To Fall Asleep" is hugely recommended for fans of Tim Hecker, Marsen Jules, Grouper and Kompakt’s essential Pop Ambient series of compilations, or if these names aren't familiar to you, try this out if you're after a collection of dreamy, evocative semi-acoustic blissful pieces for the early hours.

PETRI KULJUNTAUSTA: MOMENTUM CD  EUR 10
"No wonder Petri Kuljuntausta was the one who wrote in last month [Paris Transatlantic] with that helpful background information on Terry Riley's activities in Finland in the early 1960s, as his own music is as unashamedly minimalist as the works Riley performed and recorded there all those years ago. Working with tiny samples of instrumental sound (the composer freely admits that "these performances are impossible for musicians to realise in live performance"), Kuljuntausta builds structures of deceptive simplicity, either harmonically rich ("Canvas",  "Momentum") or more straightforwardly tonal ("Four Notes", "Freedom").
 Sorry to be a predictably boring old fart, but the music of Sibelius does come to mind, as does that of Bryars, Pärt and Tavener, and calling your piece "When I Am Laid In Earth" and featuring a harpsichord certainly leads one to believe there might be a Purcell connection in there too, but this is no homage to Michael Nyman's Greenaway soundtracks. Kuljuntausta's looping and phasing has more in common with what Reich and Riley were doing back when young Nyman was finishing up high school. As is often the case with minimal music, you get as much out of it as you're prepared to put in - let it all flow over you and it's pleasant enough, but try to get into how Kuljuntausta has combined his samples and built up the pieces, and it becomes quite fascinating - especially the closing "In The Beginning", where Kuljuntausta adds more colours to his palette in the form of field recordings. Not so sure how you're supposed to get hold of a copy, so you'd better email Kuljuntausta at the address above - as he was most forthcoming with Riley information, I'm sure he'll reply." — Dan Warburton, Paris Transatlantic

LACKLUSTER: SHOWCASE CD  EUR 15
Thw Wire: "78 minutes of moody, crepuscular Techno, created in Helsinki by a man so confident in his own abilities that he chooses a name like Lackluster - hardly the most immediately appealing prospect in the history of recorded sound.
 The artwork isn't particularly inviting either - meticulous drawings of a gloved hand disecting a butterfly with a scalpel. But this selection, which gathers into one place pieces recorded by Esa Ruoho between 1999 and 2001 and released on various 7"s, 12"s and compilations released during that period, is shot through with sparks of imagination, suggesting that Ruoho's lowish profile, compared with fellow Finns like Brothomstates and Ovuca is undeserved, if altogether surprising. Lackluster's music is theoretically focused towards the dancefloor, but it's gloomy whispers and muted sparkles don't go out of their way to appeal to the 'hands in the air' brigade.
 The more discerning, however, will find much to enjoy in the inventive rhythms and sweet clarity of Ruoho's melodic lines."

 RUNE LINDBÆK: SØNDAG CD  EUR 15

Søndag digs deep into seventies soul and American TV series, with tracks such as OK, Kjør Romskip, Sin Zen or Junta Jæger, which wouldn’t have sounded out of place in any episode of Chips or Charlie’s Angel. Lindabæk loves dirty disco grooves, and manipulates them with infinite precision, as he enhances his compositions with modern techniques and poly cultural fantasy elements. He, for instance, chooses Brazilian-inspired vocals to give the beautiful Fotihusedit a most enjoyable twist. On Krus Kontroll, it is a saxophone that enlightens the Barry White-esque love groove, only pushed slightly off-track by intermittent injections of dub. Lindbæk alternates between cleverly written up and down tempo tracks, constantly working to the bottom of the groove the way Motown producers used to. Let’s be clear here though; this is not the work of a musician trying to rewrite history. All Lindbæk is doing is using carefully selected elements of the last thirty years to extend his lexicon. Combining traditional acoustic and electric ambiences, as singular waves of guitars come breaking on the shores of Englekstrakt or Nattvandring, with contemporary structures, Søndag encapsulates the most rhetorical forms of music. Incredibly modern, and yet totally reverent, Søndag is a classic album by all means. Rune Lindbæk has a lot  to offer as a musician and record producer, and this album only demonstrates the most vibrant side of his talent.

Tim Haslett, CMJ:"As the school year begins, one goes in search of more cerebral dance music, something that agitates the mind rather than soothes it. Well, here's a record that will do both. Rupert Parkes, a k a Photek, dwells among us, but his music comes from somewhere that even the Mars explorer has yet to reveal. Nowhere is that fact more evident than on his new magnum opus, Modus Operandi , one of the most daring and challenging drum 'n' bass records of the past five years. "Smoke Rings" alone makes this album a necessary acquisition, with its muffled cries for help disappearing into the cacophonous percussion that somehow retains a method in its madness. The track is like Edward Munch's "The Scream" pressed on wax: an anguished, existential nightmare that keeps you wired and tired until there's no respite to be found. The menacing "Hidden Camera" is a paranoiac's dream come true, the limit of constant, invisible surveillance that haunts the listener long after the track's end. "Aleph 1" incorporates some acidic noise into a landscape of lush, risingand falling strings. The title track's lounge-jazz stylings are deceptive, for beneath the calm exterior is a bass line waiting to burst into the daylight. Though Modus Operandi never climbs above about 98 BPM, it has an internal uneasiness that is hard to refuse. In many respects, this album could be considered  "post-drum 'n' bass" because it dispenses with virtually all the cliches associated with the genre and takes chances few artists would attempt."

ST. GERMAIN: TOURIST CD  EUR 15

The first track is instantly recognizable to anyone who watched the NFL Playoffs "You Gotta Show Me Something" tv ads. That track, "Rose Rouge" utilizes an almost big band sounding percussion loop while a soulful voice croons "I want you to get together... Put your hands together one time." "Montego Bay Spleen" takes shape around a laid back organ and guitar groove. "Land Of" begins with some gospel keyboard, but the song really takes off once the bass kicks in and the saxes blast. Lionel Hampton-esque vibes are featured on "Latin Note." The lazy groove of "Sure Thing" is the high point of the album. Tourist is truly a groundbreaking album, especially coming from legendary jazz label, Blue Note. It's jazzy and bluesy but also has very danceable elements of house and dub. This album is a seamless mix of the best of that all of these genres have to offer.

Danske Bent Sørensen er en spennende komponist, ikke knuget av konvensjoner og med ørene åpne for nye klanguttrykk uten at det bikker for mye mot det eksperimentelt eller spekulative. På denne CD'en har han samlet norske musikere samt den svenske stjernetrombonisten Christian Lindberg. Som titlene antyder er dette musikk som vekker fantasien. Den har spenn i seg og maner fram bilder av kyst, hav, myter og forbannelser. Det er musikk som vekker undring og stiller spørsmål. VINDVA MEI: ON FIRE CD EUR 10
Electroage: "On Fire, the debut album from the Icelandic duo Vindva Mei, is a pleasant surprise emerging from the technoid movement. Mostly away from the coldness of their German contemporaries of the genre. Vindva Mei is providing an intelligent and beautiful electronic landscape remembering images from space; a galactic odyssey without being static. The architecture of the songs found on On Fire is highly impressive as the duo' skill to manipulate electronics will certainly launch them on the forefront of the genre. The superb Sound of A Miracle moves with a slow and agile technoid beat, thick electronics and a beautiful melodic atmosphere; Lick Your Metal Suck My Pedal is basically structured by its complex rhythm. The experimental Bad  Chemicals is truly a filmic music with its gloomy, abyss-like wiry texture. From Space With Love moves with an agile amalgam of distant speech samples along a ambient synths over a subtle crunchy groovy rhythm. The closing track, weirdly entitled Mister New Wave No More, brings a cold minimal, staple rhythm with the same melodic approach as the opening track. On Fire is directly made for the propulsion of the imagination. The subtlety of Vindva Mei's compositions is wondrous as their technical capabilities is outstanding. Those who are hypnotized by Autechre, Beefcake, Forma Tadre, Scorn, Esplendor Geometrico and other heroes of the genre will find in On Fire an album with much to offer. Like the majority of albums in the genre, On Fire is revealing another secret of its structure at each listen; making of this intriguing album an exquisite gift to the mind. Vindva Mei is adding something unique to the genre, oscillating somewhere between Earth and space."

WONDERPHONE CD + hodetelefon  EUR 5
Tina Buddeberg og Elin T. Sørensen har bygget en rekke akustiske hodetelefoner, såkalte vandremenn, utformet med tanke på å høyne den aktulle lydopplevelse ved utsjalting og forvrengning av lyd. Alle vandremennene er spesialtilpasset ulike miljø, som f.eks. vandremannen "Snø" som er laget for å lytte til fallende snø.
For å overføre denne lydopplevelsen til CD har de fått hjelp av et lydlaboratorium ved universitetet i Aalborg som har plassert små mikrofoner i øregangene på ulike akustiske mannekenger, dette for å få en fullstendig autentisk lydopplevelse. For å få en autentisk lytteopplevelse av denne CD´en kreves det hodetelefoner. Bruker man høytalere blir lyden blandet og virkningen borte. Derfor leveres dette albumet med spesialtilpasset hodetelefon. Hør f.eks. hvordan det er å gå langs Karl-Johan med gatelyd filtrert gjennom to skvulpende vannflasker. Er det slik de hører oss, de som ber om et par kroner? I perioder kompatibel med Thomas Köner.
