BIZZ CIRCUITS plays
INTIFADA OFFSPRING CD + DVD EUR 15
With BIZZ CIRCUITS play INTIFADA
OFFSPRING Frankfurt-based sound artist Sebastian Meissner (Autopoieses,
Klimek, Random_Inc) picks up the yarn of his previous
Jerusalem-releases (Random Inc "Walking in Jerusalem" and "Jerusalem:
Tales outside the framework of orthodoxy"), released on Mille Plateaux
and Ritornell. The new album has been expanded into a digital gallery
platform which combines three supplementary components: a DVD, a CD and
a vinyl version.
The CD documents Meissner's
collage-like live performances in different venues (for example
Transmediale Berlin, OK-Zentrum Linz, Kulturhuset Stockholm,
Krowoderska52 Krakow) and presents acoustic works of Israeli
Electronica and Spoken Word artists as well as peace activists. Besides
Meissner's own documentary and video material, the DVD offers
contributions by Israeli artists, such as the video-based works of
Grunwald, Weichselbaum, Finkelstein, Ziolkowsky, which document and
simultaneously artistically transform the building of the
"security/segregation wall" as well as the confrontations between
Palestinian villagers and radical Israeli settlers.
With BIZZ CIRCUITS play INTIFADA
OFFSPRING Meissner establishes himself as a composer, producer,
filmmaker, and curator of a dense, highly complex and multilayered work
of art, which is still very accessible. This release is not only the
documentation of the works of a very creative network of artists, which
moves between "the art of escapism" and peace activism, it is also the
representation of an alternative Israel.
Something you cannot hear or see, but
which is still present on play INTIFADA OFFSPRING is the level of
organization that lies behind it. To connect all the artists who are
featured on this release and to create a platform for their collective
activity and creativity is - due to the current situation in Israel - a
highly ambitious task. This concept will be tested in the second part
of this release where Meissner will approach the conflict from the
Palestinian perspective (BIZZ CIRCUITS play INTIFADA OFFSPRING Volume
2).
INTIFADA OFFSPRING plays is a
performance platform that moves between concert, spoken-word
performance, readings, panels, screenings and
real-time-media-processing, and that offers Israeli artists the
opportunity to present their work outside of Israel for the first time.
CRANK: WANTON
PHENOMENA
CD
EUR 15
Danny Zelonky, også
kjent som Low Res, med teknoide rytmer og lo-fi drum´n´bass
over søkende kortbølge av forholdsvis stillferdig,
pulserende
støy, ikke-lineær knitring og abstrakt musique
concrete.
David Howell, The Wire:
"A staggering album of cavernous, ever shifting electronics. Wanton
Phenomena
is another stunning advance for US electronica."
ALEC EMPIRE: LES
ETOILES
DES FILLES MORTES CD EUR 15
Rob Young, The Wire:"Alec
Empire´s latest sees him dropping the sledgehammer in favour of
the
solo Moog. Like a fiendish homage to Sun Ra´s synthesized Gordian
knots, Empire twiddles away on a fizzing keyboard according to a logic
and harmonic system that appears to have been conceived under a
different
gravitational field from this planet´s. Absolut verrückt!"
GAS: KÖNIGSFORST
CD EUR 25
denne. Årets skogstur!
David Howell, The
Wire:"Simultaneously
spooked and enchanting, Königsforst provides a rich, visceral
audio
experience that is as awesome as the vast, ancient forests it evokes."
STEPHAN MATHIEU:
FREQUENCY
LIB CD EUR
15
Most of Mathieu's work,
as it turns out, shares this predilection toward haze and hiss, and
frequencyLib
is no different. The songs are minimal in effort, if not sound: an
unresolving
loop or two of some acoustic-sounding source is set into play and then
manipulated ever so slightly, as though warped by heat and distressed
with
fine-grained sandpaper. A thin film of dust seems to cover Mathieu's
deceptively
simple melodic fragments, lending them the same kind of digital trompe
l'oeuil quality that characterizes Pole's earlier recordings: although
the hiss is a digital byproduct, it sounds analogue, recalling the
whisper
of aged vinyl or the static of shortwave. Indeed, in triggering these
associations,
Mathieu's use of effects comes to seem almost like a kind of artificial
nostalgia, or to put it another way, it treats nostalgia as just
another
readymade. If you're not careful, frequencyLib can slip past you almost
unnoticed: the 26 songs, mostly a minute or two long, slip subtly in
and
out of each other's skins, morphing and mirroring. frequencyLib
presents
a model of distracted listening, but this can't be accidental: with its
almost-recognizable snippets and barely-noticed shifts, it plays out
like
the perpetual soundtrack in our peripheral hearing, alluring and always
just out of reach. [Philip Sherburne @ The Wire 2001.09]
AKIRA RABELAIS:
ELONGATED
PENTAGONAL PYRAMID CD EUR 25
Will Montgomery, The
Wire:"LA
based software composer Rabelais´ album is music made on the
hardisk
of an Apple Mac. What´s most rewarding is the way Rabelais
translates
his interest in dream and fantasy into byte-crunching digital sound. He
is attracted to fleshing out soundtracks of the imagination rather than
creating pseudo-filmscapes. The tracks are mainly sets of laminated
drones
which interlock and drop in and out. Very occasionally a piano sample
or
a stray voice will float out of the bitstream, but otherwise the sound
is full of digital rasp. Fascinating -and exciting too that such
powerful
soundtools should be so easily available."
RANDOM INC: WALKING IN
JERUSALEM CD EUR 15
www.boomkat.com: A
game of two halves, excuse for the football
analogy. This continuation of Autopoeises member Random_Inc's
exploration of the sounds that flow through Jerusalem and the
influences the sights and sounds have on the many collaborators that
this new project invites aboard. On the CD a more reflective beatless
tact is taken with exclusive collaborations with the amazing Electric
Birds, Ran_Slavin, Rip Off Artist, Sony Mao, Bizz Circuits and
Ultra-Red. The more rhythmically focussed vinyl edition features
exclusives by Random_Inc with - Andreas Tilliander, Mikael
Stavoestrand, Anton 'SCSI 9' Qubikov (bo!, wicked track), Greenhouse
FX, Pisgat Zeev and Open Source. Artists featured on both formats are
Dub Taylor, Tim Hecker while the CD has additional pieces from
Random_Inc made from found sound and subtle digital processing plus
quicktime videos and lush photography. A fascinating project delivered
with great power and understanding. Highly recommended.
VARIOUS: ELECTRIC
LADYLAND
III CD EUR 15
Rob Young, The Wire:"Mille
Plateaux´s Electric Ladyland series refuses to explain itself
easily,
and that´s maybe why these spacey psychedelic Hip Hop selections
have passed so many people by. Bloated rather than blunted, these
tracks
agitate Trip Hop´s lazy complacency by applying white-heat
hysteria.
You´re left with one of the most (in)coherent collections
you´re
likely to hear all year."
